BENEDETTO LUTI
BENEDETTO LUTI (Florence 1666 - Rome 1724) Virgin and Child Pastel 39.5 × 31 cm Provenance : Anonymous sale, Paris, Me Rieunier-Bailly-Pommery, February 25, 2000, n°45. Trained in Florence by Antonio Domenico Gabbiani and protected by the Grand Duke Cosmo III de' Medici, Benedetto Luti made a career in Rome where he arrived in 1691. His style is a brilliant synthesis of the Roman and Florentine traditions of the line with a great talent of colorist. From 1710 onwards, Luti produced a series of expressive heads in pastel, using a technique already practiced by Florentine artists of the 17th century such as Christofano Allori and Il Cigoli. His contemporaries admired the lively and fresh character of these pastels executed with a mixture of delicacy and vigor. This Madonna and Child is inspired by the works of Federico Barocci, whose drawings Luti collected. The intimacy of the scene is reinforced by the delicacy of the chromatic range and the light.
