Sans l'inscription «war is over» (la guerre est finie) écrite sur le zeppelin, cette oeuvre aurait présenté au spectateur une image désolée et déprimante de la guerre. Alors que les conséquences dévastatrices de la guerre sont évidentes dans cette toile étrangement magnifique, Shepard Fairey a choisi de communiquer un sentiment de soulagement et de victoire à travers l'usage stratégique de teintes oranges chaudes et lumineuses et la suggestion de rayons de soleil pointant à l'horizon. Shepard Fairey est à son apogée quand il emprunte des caractéristiques d'affiches de propagande et se les approprie dans son contexte et avec sa technique comme il l'a fait dans cette superbe oeuvre. A zeppelin is depicted floating across a visibly battled and heavily bombed urban area. Had it not been for the wording "war is over" boldly written across the zeppelin's body this painting would have presented the viewer with a desolated and depressing image of war. While the devastating consequences of war is evident in the eerily beautiful painting, Fairey has chosen to impar t a feeling of relief and victory through his strategic use of warming and bright orange hues and the suggestion of sun rays lifting via the horizon. Shephard Fairey is at his best when he is borrowing characteristics from propaganda prints and appropriating them with his own context and technique as he has done with this brilliant painting.
