Yamadanda - Lot 93
Yamadanda
Mongolia late 19th - early 20th century
Papier-mâché. H. 61 cm
Interesting skeleton-shaped scepter surmounted by a half-vajra. This
form of scepter is frequently associated with Yama, the judge of the dead, who
and is brandished by dancers wearing the taurine mask of this god
at monastery dances. Note the beautifully stylized
forms of the figure.
Like wood, papier-mâché is a material favored by the Mongols.
