Shadbhuja Mahakala Buryatia, circa 19th century Papier-mâché. H. 21 cm Mahakala is shown here in his classic blue six-armed form, trampling Ganesha in the heart of a blossoming lotus. in full bloom. His six hands respectively hold a kartrika and a kapala, a damaru, a trident, a rosary of skulls and a rope. and a rope. He also wears a crown and a necklace of skulls, and is clad in tiger skin around the waist around his waist and an elephant skin on his back. This object is a superb example of Buryat artistic production. papier-mâché, a material easier to find and, like wood and clay, easier to work with for the Siberian Buddhists. Note the great attention to detail and finesse of execution by the the artist.
