Theater mask - Lot 137
Theater mask
Japan, Edo period (1603 - 1868)
Wood, plaster and pigments.
H. 28 cm
Interesting mask featuring an unusual character
with realistic features under developed eyebrows, and featuring
veins in relief on the forehead. It clearly
clearly falls into the category of Otoko male characters,
perhaps a particular form of Kagekiyo, a former great fighter
exiled fighter reduced to begging.
