Bodhisattva China, circa 10th - 11th century (Song Dynasty) Copper alloy. H. 15 cm The bodhisattva, probably Avalokiteshvara, is seated in Lalitasana, right knee raised on a rock. The flat, unmodelled back places this sculpture this sculpture into the category of votive sculptures votive sculptures cast in large numbers for distribution to devotees. This elegant sculpture is similar to the one in the Musée Guimet under no. EO.2527, bequeathed by Marcel Bing in 1921, published by Gaston Migeon in his book "L'art chinois". Musée du Louvre. Paris, Editions Albert Morancé, 1924 (no. 62, pl. 35). A few other examples are known, with variations variations in the base of the pedestal.
