Bhuta (Bhûta) cult pectoral India, Tulu Nadu (North Kerala, South Karnataka), circa 19th century Copper alloy. Height: 57 cm Important female "pectoral mask" probably associated with Jumadi/ Dhumavati, featuring the classic two figures of cobras spreading their hoods over their shoulders. This type of object worn along with masks by mediums to represent the female to represent the female spirits they wished to bring into them to express themselves during trances. In the course of these bhûta cults requested and financed by families, the called spirits divulged through their masks, give advice and guidance for everyday life or the resolution of various conflicts, or more simply tell or sing myths associated with them.
