Gajalakshmi (Gajalakṣmī) - Lot 25
Gajalakshmi (Gajalakṣmī) India, Kerala, circa 16th century Copper alloy. H. 14.5 cm Lakshmi's aspect "with elephants" is traditionally depicted seated in sattvaparyanka on a lotiform throne, supported by an architectural pedestal. Her hands support lotus stems that bloom above her shoulders. She is leaning against a torana whose pillars support the two traditional elephants that water her with their trunks. Gajalakshmi's iconography is attested to very early in India, as she is found on coins, votive plaques and even integrated into the Buddhist pantheon on the vedika pillars of Bharhut as early as the second century BC. Its popularity is essentially linked to the fact that it is associated with wealth, prosperity and fertility. Provenance : Collection of Madame L.
