Agastya - Lot 46
Agastya Java circa 9°-10° century Volcanic stone. H. 60 cm Rare representation of one of the rishi, beings considered to be a kind of yogi devotees of Shiva who, in meditation, listened to the cosmos to hear him utter the primordial sound of the Veda hymns, revealing the cosmic order. His attributes, the rosary and the vase, allow us to identify him as Agastya, a fervent Shiva Brahmin who is said to have been the main Hinduizer of southern India. His cult is attested in Java, where his representations were arranged in one of the three secondary cellas surrounding the main cella of a Shivaite temple. Provenance : Collection of Madame L.
