Jizo Bosatsu (Jizō bosatsu ) - Lot 201
Jizo Bosatsu (Jizō bosatsu ) Japan, Edo period circa 17° -18° century Stone. H. 67 cm Beautiful classical representation of the Japanese version of the bodhisattva Kshitigarbha, who vowed to save all beings and only attain Buddhahood once the underworld was empty of all creatures. One of the most popular divinities of Japanese Buddhism, Jizo bosatsu is depicted here standing on a blossoming lotus, brandishing his traditional kakkhara in his right hand. The inscription on the bottom of the stele indicates the date of the 13th day of the 5th month of year 4 of an era unfortunately difficult to decipher. Provenance : Collection of Madame L.
