Vajradaka - Lot 20
Vajradaka
Tibet. circa 15th-16th century
Copper alloy. H. 14.5 cm
Rare representation of the deity traditionally depicted
crouched on a blossoming lotus, hands folded in front of his chest
holding the bell and vajra, head raised. He is
dressed in a tiger skin and a rosary of severed heads hangs
around his neck.
This type of sculpture was normally placed on a pedestal
which served as a burner to incinerate sesame seeds
introduced through the deity's mouth during certain purification rites.
purification rites.
The smoke resulting from the carbonization process would then rise
to escape through the same mouth and dissipate
the ritualist's defilements.
