Beautiful coffee pot - Lot 33
Beautiful coffee pot
Tibet circa 19th century
Copper and brass. H. 29 cm
A beautiful coffee pot derived from the classical "monk's cap" shape
inspired the creation of many Chinese porcelains from the Ming dynasty onwards.
Ming dynasty.
The hammered copper body rests on a lotiform brass foot. The shoulder
is embellished with two brass side handles and applications
of three ornamental silver plates. The largest in the center
features a Kirtimukha above a crescent moon.
Large teapots of this type could have been used in monasteries,
but the smaller ones could also have been used for serving beer
in secular households.
