Senufo male figure - Lot 108
Senufo male figure
Attributed to the "Cock's Crest" master workshop
Ivory Coast
Wood. H. 68 cm
Interesting standing male sculpture, which, beyond its general style, and even if it
even if it does not bear the marks of a long and intensive use "in situ", presents a set of particular details
such as the eyes outlined with double lines, the scarification descending in curves
from the wings of the nose to the corners of the mouth, the chin and mouth forming a protruding point
oblong torso and arched back, with very broad arms at the shoulders
arms are very wide at the shoulders, encircled by rings before tapering to the elbows, and the legs are short.
to suggest an attribution, if not to the so-called "cock's crest" master himself
because of a few specific details, but at least to one of the great disciples of his
his workshop. The right hand must have been brandishing a scepter or weapon.
Note the remarkable interplay of volumes and openings typical of this particular style
of Senufo art.
